Managing parcel audits and tail spend

Has anyone here dealt with shipping invoice errors recently? I am trying to figure out if hiring a third party for parcel auditing is actually worth the time or if it is better to keep it in house. Any feedback on the actual recovery rates would be helpful.

We looked into this last quarter because our shipping costs were getting difficult to track. It turns out that manual reviews are nearly impossible when you have a high volume of invoices. I found that using an external service for parcel auditing is often more practical because they have the tools to spot failures we usually miss.

It is a pretty straightforward way to handle those annoying one off purchases too. I like that there are no long term commitments involved because I prefer keeping our procurement options flexible.
