      <title>2009 Long Snapper Commits!!</title>
      <link>http://www.chrissailerkicking.com/index.php?act=GetClip&amp;aid=85</link>
<description>Keyt first 2009 commit for IU

On Monday Indiana got their first football commit for 2009 when long snapper Josh Keyt decided to accept the Hoosiers’ offer. Keyt, who is 6-foot-3, 230-pounds, plays center and defensive end at North Putnam High School in Indiana. North Putnam is a 2A power located about 40 miles west of Indianapolis.

Peegs.com talked to Keyt Monday night and he explained the circumstances under which he will be attending IU.

“They told me what they would do is since they have Brandon Bugg, he’ll be a senior, they will redshirt me (in 2009 as a preferred walk-on) and after that I will be a four year, full-ride scholarship player,” Keyt said.

Keyt said that Indiana’s interest in him came about fairly recently and took off from there.

“They started recruiting me about four or five months ago, sending me letters and stuff in the mail,” he said.

Keyt was also hearing from Louisville, Cincinnati and Kentucky. Although he had not received any other offers, one school seemed like it was close to pulling the trigger on an offer to the talented long snapper.

“I just went to Louisville and they talked about it but they haven’t offered me anything yet,” he said.

Keyt cited location, new facilities and recent success of long snappers as reasons for why he chose IU.

“It’s only about 45 minutes from my house and they have been the nicest to me,” Keyt said. “They just had Tim Bugg go into the NFL for long snapping. They are rebuilding their facilities and they will have a brand new weight room and everything for players to hang out and it just felt like it was the closest place to home for me.”

Although long snapping will be his primary position for the Hoosiers, Keyt said that the staff told him that he will get a chance on the other side of the ball as well.

“They were saying that after a few years they were going to work me in at practice with the defensive ends,” Keyt said.

Playing at a position like long snapper can make it tough to get recognized by college recruiters, so many times a prospect must seek outside assistance to get his name out there, and that is what Keyt did.

“I would like to thank Chris Rubio and Chris Sailer Kicking because they helped me a lot to get exposure with all the schools,” Keyt said.

Peegs.com was able to speak with Chris Rubio at California-based Chris Sailer Kicking on Monday night and he elaborated on what it is he does.

“I work for a company called Chris Sailer Kicking and I am the long snapping instructor,” Rubio said. “I work with all the long snappers. We have several camps throughout the year and I also do private lessons.”

Rubio said the camps they put on is a great way for prospects all across the country to get an idea of where they stand up with other players at their position.

“It is a good barometer for people to see how good they really are,” Rubio remarked.

Rubio has worked with Keyt for a few years and he said that IU is getting a player with the kind of attitude that coaches love to see.

“I have known Josh for about two years now,” Rubio said. “He came to a couple of camps. His dad has flown me out for a couple of lessons, some one-on-one type lessons. He is a good kid. What I like about Josh is he is a very, very good listener. He is a ‘yes sir’ or ‘no sir’ type of kid, but if you tell him to do something he’ll do it and he won’t just give you lip service. You just talk to him about it and he’ll do it. He’s got a great frame on him. He is about 6’2 and a half, 6’3, a solid 230 already, so he is going to put some more muscle and weight on him.”

Rubio also said that the North Putnam standout stacks up well with other long snappers he has worked with.

“He is good, really good,” Rubio said. “Josh is good, he is up there. He has very good size compared to a lot of kids. He’s got really good just raw strength. He’s got a very good physically mature body but he is a big, strong kid. He is a good blocker. He has really good speed. He has always been raw but now he has actually fine-tuned it to this point now.”

Keyt, who was recruited by Coach Billy Lynch, said that he would like to pursue a major that will allow him to work in the medical field when his playing days are finished.

      <title>Spring Event Long Snapping Results!!!</title>
      <link>http://www.chrissailerkicking.com/index.php?act=GetClip&amp;aid=77</link>
<description>6th Annual National Kicking and Snapping Spring Event
Las Vegas – 2008
LONG SNAPPING RESULTS
Every Long Snapper in attendance was tested on The Rubio Target. Their score and speed were combined to form the RSI (Rubio Standard Index): The RSI is the score divided by the average speed. You may obtain 2 bonus points for an average of .75-.79, 2 more bonus points for an average of .70-.74 and an additional 2 more bonus points if you average below .70.
The Top 16 made it to the finals round where they were paired off by seeds: #1 vs #16, #2 vs #15 and so on. It was a heated battle with an all California finals being made up of Jason Bertoni of Santa Monica JC and Robbie Horrell (2010) out of Rancho Cucamonga HS. After a good little snap-off, the winner was Robbie Horrell. Congratulations go out to him and his family!!!!

<description>Chris Sailer Kicking & Snapping Event Recap

Many of the elite kickers, punters and snappers, both in the class of 2007 and class of 2008, converged upon Las Vegas in January to compete in the 5th Annual Kicking & Snapping Event hosted by Chris Sailer Kicking. Here is a recap of the event...

The 5th Annual Kicking & Snapping Event Sponsored by NIKE and hosted by Chris Sailer Kicking was once again a tremendous success. 325 plus specialists gathered in Las Vegas on the weekend of January 13-14, 2007 bringing together the best the nation had to offer. Athletes gathered from over 40 states and 3 countries this year.
The Event has become so large that some call it the “Super Bowl” for Kickers, Punters, and Long Snappers. Over the course of the two days, athletes participated in instructional drills, attended informational meetings, and watched professional and collegiate kickers demonstrate kicking, punting, and snapping skills at the absolute highest level.

The Event is designed to help High School and Junior College specialists become the best they can be. The camp offers the ultimate exposure for young kickers, punters, and long snappers looking to take their game to the college level.

A couple of former Southern California prep and college football players have gone from being special teamers to the the trainers of up-and-coming kickers, punters and snappers from all over the country...

Very few people see as many kickers over the course of a year than Chris Sailer. On the same note, few see as many longsnappers as Chris Rubio.
Sailer and Rubio have developed one of the most successful kicking/snapping training services in the country and the pair have come a long way since Sailer was on the receiving end of Rubio’s snaps as a punter/kicker for UCLA in the mid-1990’s.

After Sailer started playing in the Arena Football League, he was looking for an offseason job so he turned to the one thing he knew better than anything: kicking the ball.

“It was an offseason job for me,” said Sailer. “I started the business in 1999 because I saw a need for a good kicking service. When I first started this, there wasn’t much available to kickers. Especially if you didn’t live in certain areas. So I did these small camps and lessons when I was playing arena ball. A dire need was out there.”

Sailer said that as it developed, more and more college coaches knew the value in it.

“They said if you can do something for us that would be awesome. For me, it was about building a reputation for kids that were deserving of scholarships. The first year, we did a local camp and there were six coaches there. Coaches told me that we’ve got to take this and make this bigger and we can make this the best in the business,” said Sailer.

By the time the first national Chris Sailer Kicking Camp took place in 2003, they were getting kids from all over the country to come.

“We had our first camp in Las Vegas and our goal was to get kids from all the states and all of the different weather conditions. We wanted kids from the high publicity states, like California, Texas and Florida but then also kids from South Dakota, Montana and Rhode Island. They were all on the same field, with the same field, the same conditions, same snappers and same holders,” said Sailer. “And we wanted to get these kids scholarships.”

At that point, Sailer knew he had a niche that became a huge service to coaches from around the country.

“With the evaluation period in May, coaches really drove me to do it,” said Sailer. “They knew it was needed and said with the way we run it, the professionalism we bring and the credibility we had with the kids, it would help. We have an honest, unbiased assessment of these kids and know that one poor evaluation, we get that opposite word of mouth.”

Now, their experience working with these kickers and snappers has them on the rolodex of nearly 100 schools.

“We work with about 95 of the I-A coaches in the country,” said Sailer. “About 30 coaches will say to us ‘if he’s a guy, we’ll offer him’ so we help them get guys. The percentage of scholarshipped kickers is growing.”

The numbers at Chris Sailer Kicking have been staggering. By their fourth annual kicking event, which took place last summer, over 50 of their participants got scholarships, and 70% of their kickers this year will have a scholarship.

This weekend, the National Kicking & Snapping Event will take place. In May, the Spring National Kicking & Snapping Event will happen and the top kickers, punters and snappers will come back in the summer for the Top 12.

Many of the elite kickers nationally participated in the Chris Sailer Kicking Event.

“Over 80% of our players are in D-I programs. This last year, seven of them were on the Lou Groza Award list and three were on the Ray Guy Award list. A lot of kickers will fly out across the country just to get an evaluation.”

But Sailer said that while the exposure is a benefit, most importantly, they want the kickers to become better.

“Our first and foremost goal is to make these kids a better kicker and be a college level kicker,” said Sailer. “Our goal has been to make these kids better, the added bonus is the exposure.”

The camps aren’t the only time, though, that the kickers are trained.

“We do lessons on a weekly basis,” said Sailer. “During the offseason, we’re out there at least once a week and during the season just about every day. It’s year round.”

They’ve also gotten sponsorship from Nike.

“That is a big thing for us because Nike is a national brand,” said Sailer.

Sailer prepped at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, where he was one of the most successful kickers in California state history.

A USA Today First Team All-American and the CIF Player of the Year, as a kicker, Sailer had scholarship offers from around the country. He ended up at UCLA where he was the punter for the Bruins for four years and handled the kicking duties for two years. In 1997, he became one of the few players in college football history to be named a First Team All-American as both a kicker and as a punter.

Notre Dame also produced one of his first success stories.

“One of the biggest stories was Nick Folk who was an all-league kicker at Notre Dame who we struggled to get a scholarship for,” said Sailer. “He comes to Arizona as a no-name recruit and ends up starting for four years and is in the Senior Bowl and now he will probably be drafted. Other guys like Taylor Melhauf and Tom Schneider at Cal have succeeded. Schneider came to us as a soccer playerand never had any football coaching, but showed a lot of potential. Then Cal took a chance on him.”

Last year, Sailer had Kai Forbath and Kyle Petersen as participants and they were both named to the U.S. Army All-American Game. This year, David Green, another Sailer Kicking alum played in the game.

“Bryan Anger came to us as a receiver and is now one of the top punters in the nation and going to Cal,” said Sailer.

So with all of the success that was coming from kicking and punter, Sailer knew one thing was missing. And that is where his old buddy Rubio came in.

“The first year we did Las Vegas, it was just kicking and punting. Coaches said we wanted to see it real: the snap, the hold and the kick. Rubio was a good family friend of mine, so I asked him to watch these kids and we couldn’t believe the size. We thought we should do this more seriously. We’ve gone from 0-2 to snappers a year to 20 per year getting scholarships,” said Sailer.

For Rubio, getting to this point was a long journey itself.

“My freshman year in high school (at Charter Oak in Covina, Calif.), I was playing tackle football for the first time and I hated it,” said Rubio. “I was fat and chubby and my coach was a yeller. My sophomore year, I didn’t play but then I was watching a guy snap the ball to me and I thought I could do that. I bent over, snapped it with one hand and the next year, I went out for the high school team. So by the time my senior year came around, I started getting recruited.”

Rubio ended up at UCLA himself and showed up with eight other longsnappers, all walk-on’s.

“Darren Schager was the punter and Terry Donahue was one side and Bob Field was on the other and this one-handed snapper got the other seven guys cut. Then they told me I needed to learn to do it with two hands,” said Rubio.

For the three years he snapped for the Bruins, Rubio didn’t have a single bad snap and his final year was Sailer’s double All-American season, monumental for Rubio as well. The Bruins were co-Champs of the Pac-10 and finished the season ranked fifth after winning the Cotton Bowl and their final 10 games.

Rubio’s career ended and he started teaching at a middle school until Sailer called him up.

“I started doing lessons and before too long, I was going full-time,” said Rubio. “Casey Hale from Corona Del Mar was the first guy I trained who got a full-ride. He went to Duke at 6-0, 185.”

Rubio’s personality rubbed off on the kids and he was able to train several prospects at a position that gets little to no publicity, unless something goes awry.

“Being a snapper at UCLA for three years and not having a bad snap helped, but I think a lot of it has to do with my personality,” said Rubio. “I relate to the kids well, I was a middle school teacher before, and it helped me.”

Now, snapping has become just as much a part of the specialization of the game as anything else.

“Douglas makes a shoulder pad that is a specific snapping shoulder pad,” said Rubio. “Guys will want their pads a certain way. And where before a decent linebacker and a decent snapper would help a kid, now that scholi is being swallowed by an outstanding snapper. Christian Yount (a freshman at UCLA), he basically tapped out of defensive line and it was a darn good idea because as a junior, he already had two offers and that was unheard of. Guys are doing it because it’s a more specific position and not everyone wants to do it.”

Rubio has seen the increase in snappers come to the camps and each year it gets bigger.

“Every year it’s grown,” said Rubio. “Last year was 17 and while a lot of it is on how many schools need kids, as word grows the group increases."

A good time, according to Rubio, is to get the punt snap back in .80 seconds for 15 yards. Also important to him is if a snapper can block.

“That’s a big key, let me see you block when all hell breaks loose,” said Rubio. “I want to see if you can snap and can block. You’ve gotta be able to do both.

Rubio now trains about 20 kids on a regular basis and gets even more video to watch and analyze. When he watches a game, he can do it in 10 minutes, focusing on fourth down punts and field goals and PAT’s.

When he’s looking at a prospective snapper, he has certain things he looks for.

“Usually they’ll come to me, and I’ll stand up a kid in line and look for kids with long arms. Flexibility helps and someone who can throw a football decent. I can go 1-2 days without a football, teaching them leg balance, back form and hand quickness. We don’t even use a football. Some of them oversnap and I’d rather see 20 great balls than 70 great balls. I want quality over quantity. I can tell beforehand, when watching a kid snap, if it’s going to go left, right, up or down. I can easily tell from the camera angle.

Rubio said that other things stand out when he's watching a snapper.

A lot of it is confidence. I don’t care when a kid makes a bad snap, how’s your head? Then do it again. I try to de-stress them and remember, there is someone hungry who doesn’t even care right now. I would talk to (former UCLA guard) Andy Meyers during the play so I wouldn’t focus.

Rubio knows just how far the position has come.

“I had a scholarship for three of my five years and it was kind of a validation thing. This position is becoming one that guys are taking a lot of pride in it. At first, when you heard ‘long snapper’, you’d say it under your breath but now they want everyone to know. They love to sport their long snapping shirts.”

Still, as important as kicking and snapping is to the game, Sailer and Rubio both acknowledge some of the benefits of being special teamers, primarily when it comes to practice.

“Sailer and I were famous for going out to practice a half hour early, warm up, loosen up then go and watch TV. We’d do live action then go back in and watch some more. I said to Coach Donahue ‘you don’t ever talk to me’ and he said ‘if I never speak to you again, you’ve done a perfect job’. You don’t ever want to hear anyone talk about you.”
